Dual Qualification from the UK & SwitzerlandMaster of Arts in TESOL

Dual Qualification combining the UK National Occupational Standards Master’s (Level 7 Diploma) and the Swiss Master of Arts in TESOL

The Master of Arts in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) is an international master’s programme combining teaching competencies with educational management skills. It is designed for individuals aspiring to become teachers, academic professionals, or educational managers in the global English language teaching sector.

The programme is jointly delivered by LRN (UK) – a UK Government‑recognised awarding body within the National Occupational Standards framework – and SIMI Swiss (Switzerland). This collaboration provides learners with an internationally standardised academic foundation while developing leadership thinking and management capabilities in a modern educational environment.

The programme integrates the UK National Occupational Standards for the “Academic Professional” role – the national professional benchmark for teaching specialists and academic managers. Learners are trained to teach, conduct research, and lead as well as develop educational programmes at organisational or international levels.

Upon completion, learners will receive:

  • Level 7 Diploma in TESOL awarded by LRN, regulated by Ofqual (UK Government), equivalent to Master’s level (RQF Level 7). This qualification incorporates the Academic Professional competencies, with an average annual salary of £47,652 according to UK Government statistics (2024).

  • Master of Arts in TESOL awarded by SIMI Swiss – certifying international-level competence in teaching, research, and educational management.

TESOL UKDetailed programme

Modules

The TESOL Master’s programme comprises a total of 180 UK Credits (equivalent to 90 ECTS Credits), including 9 specialised units in English language teaching.

Unit 1: Understanding Language, Methodology and Resources for Teaching (60 credits)

This unit provides learners with an in-depth understanding of the nature of language and TESOL teaching methodologies. Learners engage with foundational theories of applied linguistics, pedagogical methodologies, and the effective use of teaching resources (materials, technology, and tools) for TESOL. The aim is to develop pedagogical thinking and the ability to select, organise, and design lessons appropriate for different learners and learning objectives.

Assessment Methods:

  • 2 externally set and marked assignments – each 2,500 words,
  • 1 Viva Voce Assessment (oral examination) lasting 20 minutes.
Unit 2: Principles of TESOL Teaching (60 credits)

This unit focuses on developing practical teaching skills, including lesson planning, classroom management, and selection of appropriate teaching methods and resources. Learners are required to observe, reflect on, and evaluate their own and others’ teaching to improve pedagogical competence. The unit supports the development of classroom leadership, adaptability in teaching situations, and enhanced TESOL teaching effectiveness in diverse contexts.

Assessment Methods:

  • 1 externally set and marked assignment by SIMI Swiss EQA – 3,000 words,
  • Evidence portfolio, including:
    • Video evidence of practical teaching sessions,
    • Portfolio demonstrating progress or improved methods in practical teaching.

Practical Teaching Competence:
Learners are required to provide evidence of a minimum of 20 hours of teaching or observation, including at least 10 prepared lessons and 4 lessons delivered in practice.

Research Report (60 credits)

This unit requires learners to conduct an independent research study in TESOL. Under academic supervision, learners choose a topic, design the research, collect and analyse data, and present findings in an academic report. The unit develops research skills, critical thinking, and the ability to apply research findings to improve teaching practice. It also prepares learners for further advanced research or doctoral studies.

Assessment Methods:

  • Extended Written Assignment, 5,000–6,000 words.
